I was so shocked to hear of Nick's passing that I could not believe it. What a wonderful spirit. Nick took my husband Geoffrey and myself to the Berowra House when we were doing some preliminary doing for a sustainable development in tourism in Tropical Queensland. As we were all Geminis, we didn't stop talking the whole day nor did we stop when he came to stay with us in FNQ. Nick was my Design Studio Master in 4th year architecture (2002) in the University of New South Wales. It was the most memorable design semester in my uni career which culminated in a great visit to the Robin Boyd Education Centre (Bundanon) , where we had to build our temporary shelter designs. Nick was always thoughtful with good feedback and encouraging of our ideas, and never ever negatively critical as some lecturers can be. As a result the whole studio, of both local and international students, came up with amazing shelters that explored concepts of shelter in the australian landscape. I remember many funny incidents during that trip, when Nick had to mend my first-time botched attempt at scrambled eggs, or when he used the electric drill to open the toolbox when the keys to the padlock had been lost. Rest in peace Nick, thank you for helping one Malaysian student live, think and realize what australian design is. Best wishes, Shi.

I met Nick when he stayed with us in Glasgow following his stint at a summer school in Finland. He was casually intoduced by our mutual friend Stephen Harty as "Nick" and it wasn't until several beers later that his surname surfaced. Glenn, Keith Cottier (AJC), Bob Bruce (Bates Smart) and my dad, Graeme had all been at Uni at the same time, so a vicarious bond was instantly (and temporarily) formed between Nick and me. I was very sad to hear that such a warm fellow and a major architectural talent had been taken from us so young. My sincerest condolences go to all generations of his family and close friends. A few years ago, a house at Whale Beach on Sydney's northern peninsula, then in the process of being built, caught my attention. When in Sydney I like to spend time around Whale Beach, and often take my mother there to relax and enjoy the ambience of the area. On one occasion I asked the builders if it would be OK to have a look around the house, to which request they were welcoming. The architectural solutions employed in the house are impressive, and the interior spaces with their use of glass similarly welcome in the exterior space and ocean views in delightful ways. Some time later I learnt the house was the work of Nicholas Murcutt. Recently, a Japanese architect I know, and who is currently working in Sydney, let me know he had passed away. I never met Nicholas Murcutt in person, however the time spent looking at and thinking about that work of his, in some way makes me feel as though I have. I remember a walk to Balmoral beach one afternoon, Nick barefoot and carrying coffee, standing by the rocks overlooking the ocean and talking about our families - Nick always gave wise advice. I also remember a decade later visiting Nick, Rachel, Neil and Camilla at the architectural office they shared, full of warmth and humour and good designs - I believe they were then designing for the Sydney Olympics Afterwards too I remember Nick telling Rachel how very much he loved her. Nick, I do not know exactly what made you get lung cancer when you were fit and healthy and had never smoked a day in your life. I do know that the loss to those around you, and even to those you met on the way, is immense. I do know too that God will have saved a place in Heaven for you, from where you will continue to take care of those you love.

I met Nick many times and was always inspired by his energy, drive and passion for everything real. The first time I met him was when he was a guest crit at my mid semester Architectural Design Session. He did not hold back, proceeded to grill me like never before and picked holes through all of my work. The most annoying thing was that everything he said made perfect sence and the way he expained it made it sound so obvious. It genuinely felt like construtive critisism. A common trait of exceptional people. I asked him to Crit me on the side but he did not want to undermine my current tutuor. Another admiral trait. One of the most distinctive memories I have of Nick is coming home to the house in Mandolong Rd with Fiona after having been out with our friends and Nick and about 3 of his friends were playing some sort of science 'truth or dare' game. His friend Rolf Adams was standing inside a re-shaped coat hanger, trying to push himself through the middle of it for some sort of dare. Nick and all his friends were laughing crazily and they roped us into playing a game that invloved a blindfold and trying not to step on eggs placed strategically around the room. Wow, wow, wow, so sad. My wife and I were students when Nick was a tutor at Sydney Uni. He was famously our tutor when I crashed my car off a bridge when on a field trip in Tanja on the south coast. I remember with a laugh his concern that I was okay after I walked back to where we were staying yet (and this was not 30min after the accident) asking me if I wanted to borrow his car to drive back to Bega. A brave man indeed. We had Nick again later in final design of final year as our tutor for a second time. During that time Nick took about 4 weeks off and went to Everest base camp.
