Phil was a bard. He had the song for every occasion: funny, beautiful, sad and poignant. Around a camp fire he could sing all night and know all the words and all the chords. He would have known at least 300 songs. Phil loved a good yarn and never let the truth get in the way of a great tale. His best joke was an amazing tale of a man with a speech impediment who went duck shooting. The unfortunate impediment had him place elf after the first syllable of every word. It went on forever about the "delfuck shelfooting" and getting stuck in mud "squelfelsh, squelfelsh" and concluded with “melfissed the belfastards!" It took some telling and it was hilarious! He loved sailing - did the Melbourne to Davenport several times; the first time in a little Red Jacket. He loved travel, first thing he would do in a new place was go for a walk with a compass and get his bearings. Then he would find an appropriate place for a drink and a yarn. He also loved a drink! He loved his children and was very proud of their achievements. His oft stated philosophy was "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!”
