Jock, Mr. B and I spent two summers touring the Brit Row festival circuit and in between did some Iron Maiden, Oasis and various others. The only time I couldn't deal with Jock was after several weeks of touring and he was still relentlessly good humoured; I just couldn't deal with it and barked at him 'cause I wasn't able to stay as calm as he was! To my knowledge he never bad mouthed anybody and was always there to do more than his share and offer to help others do their jobs. He made me laugh a lot, usually on purpose but every now and then he would inadvertently show his colonial innocence in a way that always made him more lovable. As a team the three of us seemed to work really well together and never have I enjoyed life on the road so much. His son and mine were born a few months apart and when they were very young knew each other. When they were toddlers Jock's family moved back to Australia, but in the last few years the two boys have met each other again and despite the fact that they have very different career trajectories they seem to have struck up a friendship. He was unique and irreplaceable and while I am aware he had his shortcomings he was a man I will always respect and miss.

Compared with many in the business, my time with Jock was almost a blip, but what a blip it was to leave such a lasting impression. I worked with Jock on the Verve's 1998 summer tour. I was brought in as a replacement tech but that's not the point. Jock was open and warm and on the bus he was always game for good conversation. I think he was both shocked and impressed that I was reading Dante's Inferno. As he put it, "rather heavy reading for the bus, eh?" He also questioned my choice of sushi and Guinness for breakfast (first meal upon waking on the bus, no matter the time, is always breakfast, yes?) but saw the brilliance of it and joined in. It was always interesting to watch him go about his job and no matter the situation or venue he always seemed calm and cool. He had a wonderful smile and an even better grin. Though I hadn't spoken to him in years the news of his passing is all the sadder because there's no longer a chance of "we'll meet up one of these days." On the other side, yes. R.I.P. -Danny

I was going to speak of the untold gigs I did with Jock since the early 80's with The Oils [and god knows how many others] and how when I moved to London he literally saved me from starvation and madness by farming me constant bit work with Maiden and Floyd. But it's more important to speak about how he took me home fed me and listened for hours and hours to my nervous blather, pie in the sky pontifications and fear of the unknown when I was lonely and homesick. There are untold thousands of us who made the road our home ... but there will only ever be one Jock. Jock I'm angry and saddened beyond belief at your passing, but whenever I remember your smile I can only smile too. Goodbye my friend. Pryce.
