Our Grandad was a very special man you know. Now that may be taken as a throw away remark at a funeral –but please allow me to tell you just some of the reasons why he actually really was so special to us. Our Grandad was a true hero – as you all know he devoted his life to defend his country & was part of the legendary rats of tobruk, known for their toughness & never say die attitude! We swelled with pride everyone time we saw him march! But not least of all Grandad was a hero to us in our lives, he was there faithfully for 4 generations of his family – as well as Mum & Aunty Helen ,he even walked his 4 granddaughters down the aisle - not many men say that now can they ?? When we heard the time for Grandad to leave us was drawing near, we felt shocked & overwhelmed with sadness he’s been a big part of our lives for so long we couldn’t imagine life with him not in it – a part of all of us believed he could beat this illness because in our minds our Grandad was indestructible! So now in Grandad’s passing – our minds turn toward all the rich memories that we have & will now treasure …I thought I would share some of my own memories with you… I remember when Grandad & Grandma used to visit us at Copacabana when we were kids on the weekends –I remember feeling so exited when we knew their car would drive in the drive way as we knew theyd have heaps of fun things planned, like the weekend Grandad brought surf mats up & we hit the beach & just had the best time ever! I remember Grandad’s breakfast bar @ home where Grandad served us “ice –cream & jelly & a punch in the belly”! I remember the BBQ’s & Grandad’s signature dish ,Macaroni & franfurts – with not packet but FRESH grated cheese served on the side –amazing! Not to forget his love of raw chillys! Grandad could fix ANYTHING – I remember he was always helping out around the house with whatever needed to be done. Right up to a couple of years ago you know, Grandad was still fixing bikes for his great grand kids! When Sophia his great grand daughter needed a set of draws & Grandad had a set that he no longer needed – he said “ do you want these drawers “ but he didn’t just pass them on he spent days painting those drawers pink & then he went & decorated the mirror with fairy stickers all around it! He also restored & painted the cot for his first great grandson Aaron – of course it was an immaculate job & that cot looked incredible! As you all know Grandad could be a little mischievous from time to time – I remember a few years ago when Grandad came back from the club after a few rounds with his mates & he fell into the bath tub! He was so heavy nobody could get him out so we had to call John to come & lift him out the bath! John did his his back in the process so it was quite the comedy of errors & the kids thought it was hilarious!! These are but just a few of the memories we will now treasure – there are so many more we will lock away in our hearts. Sweet dreams Grandad, you were always so faithful to us your family, we love you & we are really going to miss having you around.
