He used to teach us how to answer the Cryptic crosswords together. He would put a clue up on a whiteboard and let us ponder a while as we worked, whilst giving us hints. I never did get it, but it was a lot of fun.
I have only just become aware of the passing of Steven Banks. My deepest sympathy to Steve's Family. I used to work with Steve as an Integrator on JORN in 1999/2000. He was a great bloke to work with and I remember him always being proud of his son's swimming records (beating some Grant Hacket student records!). Steve always went out of his way to help me on JORN, for integrator skills and understanding JORN. He will be sadly missed.
Like so many others I worked with Steve on the JORN project. Such an easy guy to get along with and always helpful. Never flustered, his tenacity at finding and fixing problems was the reason the system worked. I bumped into Steve at Robe one year on Xmas holidays, 2004 or 2006 I think. He was holidaying there with his family and told me they were having a great break. A great family man. Later Steve & I would work together again when I joined SMS in 2007. What a guy. It's still hard to believe he's gone. Deepest sympathy to Steve's family.
15 years ago at Telstar Systems I joined Steve's software development team. He had me write test code for the JORN main radar simulator. He was very encouraging, which I needed as a graduate straight out of university. I appreciated his dry humour. Deepest sympathies to Steve's family and closest friends.
